This is the Audio Edition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas: Five Gold Rings” read by me.
This series arrives a week after each essay and is one of the features The Evergreens subscription pays for, along with the Carol Performance Series and the 12 Days of Yuleology. Monthly or annual options, same access. The written essay stays free, as it always will.
This Audio Edition follows the journey of a memory song with forfeits from hundreds of years ago, to an ever-changing tune with many regional variations, to the standardized song we sing today thanks to an operatic baritone. Find out what the Christmas Price Index counts, and why the song was thought to be a secret code.
