Why subscribe to Yuleology?
You already love Christmas music.
You know the feeling when your favorite Christmas song comes on and something inside you shifts. The nostalgia kicks in, and something inside you relaxes in a way that doesn’t happen the rest of the year.
But here’s what most people never get to experience, the story behind the song.
The heartbreak that inspired it. The unlikely person who wrote it. The reason why this song is still popular when a thousand other songs have been forgotten.
That’s what Yuleology is about. The hidden history of Christmas music, unwrapped all year long.
Who is Yuleology?
I write Yuleology as both a researcher and a working musician, with a doctorate and a career spent making this music rather than only writing about it. That matters to you in two ways. The history here rests on primary sources and archival work, not the recycled trivia that circulates every December. And because I spend my life at the piano, the organ, the marimba, and the conductor’s stand, when the music does something extraordinary I can sit down and show you, not only tell you.
Your Tier Options
Free subscribers - The Shepherds - The essays are free, and they always will be. Each one takes Christmas songs/carols and follows them back through the people, the history, and the music to the story you were never told. If the free essays are all you ever want from Yuleology, you are welcome here, and they are the real thing, not a sample.
Paid subscribers - The Evergreens - Paid membership is for readers who want to go further than an essay can take them. Several things live behind it:
The music, performed. For members I move from describing the music to playing it. Short recordings tied to various essays, where you hear the suspended note resolve, the key change land, and the harmony do what the words could only point toward.
The Twelve Days. Every December, members receive a dedicated series, one piece a day through the season. It is the deepest and most celebratory writing Yuleology does all year.
The room. Members also get the subscriber chat: a small, warm gathering of people who love this music as much as you do, with me among them.
Our premier founding member subscription - The First Noels - is also available for those inclined with extra Christmas spirit to support Yuleology, and those in this inner circle will receive a special quarterly newsletter entitled “From The Manuscript” with exclusive behind-the-scenes content, where I share what I am writing, finding, and wrestling with as the Yuleology book takes shape.
Subscribing to Yuleology means you’re not just a fan of Christmas music, you’re someone who understands it.
And once you know the stories, you will never hear Christmas music the same way again. Every song sounds richer and has a deeper meaning. Every familiar melody carries more weight.
That’s the gift Yuleology offers.
You can get a year-round seat at the table, where the history is hidden, the surprising stories are revealed, the music you already love becomes something more.
Welcome to Yuleology. The history is waiting. Let’s explore it together.
